ISTE 2014 is in the books and it will be one that I remember for a long while. I discovered new sources of information and inspiration and revisited some of my old favorites. Here are a few of the highlights from this year's experience.

Adam Bellow: Tech Commnandments 2: The Revenge
Adam Bellow is a master of presentations that are engaging, informative and fast paced. This one began by showing the transformation of ed tech through the years and then transitioned to a conversation about the crossroads at which we find ourselves in this field today.
Here are a few of his pearls of wisdom.
1. Technology has to be more than simply digital replication.
2. Innovation is not the same as iteration.
3. OWN YOUR FAILURE. Failure is not falling down it is the refusal to get back up

Ruben Puentedura: LEarning Technology and the SAMR model
This was the highlight of the convention for me. Hearing about the SAMR model from the man himself was a mountaintop experience.
One of the best pieces of advice that he had to offer us was this. If you are interested in moving your campus from augmentation to modification, you must build a community of practice where teachers share their knowledge with each other and strengthen their teaching in the process. In this same vein, redefinition is reached when you have a lively, effective community of practice where you no longer see isolated strong teachers.

Kevin carroll: keynote
Kevin Carroll is the author of 3 books all of which encourage us to embrace our spirit of play and creativity to maximize our human potential. He told us how he used play, specifically anything that involved a bouncing ball, to survive a very rocky childhood.
Here are some of my favorite Carrollisms:
1. His first love was playing ball. His second was reading. He was hooked on reading when he discovered WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.
2. Give yourself permission to dream with 2 words: Why not?
3. You can't do anything with a broke want to.
4. He refers to himself as the CEO: Chief Encouragement Officer
5. Don't talk about it, be about it.
